Molluscan Shell Pigments: an in Situ Resonance Raman Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Using Resonance Raman microspectrometry we identify polyenes as shell pigments in 13 gastropod, 1 cephalopod and 4 bivalve taxa. The pigments are either isolated polyenes or polyenes bound to other molecules. Polyenes are present in coloured parts of the shell of all investigated taxa. Pigments differ between taxa and there is no trivial relationship between colour, pigment and taxon. The same colour in different taxa may be due to different pigments; different colours in the same taxon are due to different pigments; different colour saturation is due to different concentration of the same pigment. The pigment polyenes are unsubstituted chains of 8–13 conjugated double-bonds (16–26 carbon atoms) in the chain, with terminals incorporating –CH3 groups. This is the first demonstration of polyenes as shell pigment in the Mollusca. We also identify a carotenoid as the external, yellow pigment in Cypraea moneta.

The in-situ analysis of lipsticks by surface enhanced resonance Raman scattering
The use of surface enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) spectroscopy is reported for the in-situ characterization of chromophores in lipstick smears on glass and cotton surfaces. A surfactant is required to obtain SERRS spectra of the dyes and pigments in these waxy samples. Of the surfactants tested, poly(l-lysine) is preferred for this purpose and serves a dual function, since it also ...
متن کاملIdentifying eighteenth century pigments at the Bodleian library using in situ Raman spectroscopy, XRF and hyperspectral imaging
There are multiple challenges in analysing pigments in historic watercolour paintings on paper, and typically noninvasive, in situ methods are required. Recent developments in portable analytical instrumentation have made this more accessible to heritage institutions, but many commercial systems are not optimised for the specific requirements of manuscripts and works on paper. This paper descri...
متن کاملSurface Enhanced Raman Scattering of Crystal Violet with Low Concentrations Using Self-Assembled Silver and Gold-Silver Core-Shell Nanoparticles
The active substrates in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy were prepared through self-assembly of nanoparticles on functionalized glasses. Colloidal silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were prepared chemically in two different sizes by reduction of AgNO3 using trisodium citrate and sodium borohydride. Gold–silver core–shell nanoparticles were also prepared to compare between the o...
متن کاملAnalysing avian eggshell pigments with Raman spectroscopy.
Avian eggshells are variable in appearance, including coloration. Here, we demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy can provide accurate diagnostic information about major eggshell constituents, including the pigments biliverdin and protoporphyrin IX. Eggshells pigmented with biliverdin showed a series of pigment-diagnostic Raman peaks under 785 nm excitation. Eggshells pigmented with protoporphyrin...
متن کاملIdentification of Shell Colour Pigments in Marine Snails Clanculus pharaonius and C. margaritarius (Trochoidea; Gastropoda)
Colour and pattern are key traits with important roles in camouflage, warning and attraction. Ideally, in order to begin to understand the evolution and ecology of colour in nature, it is important to identify and, where possible, fully characterise pigments using biochemical methods. The phylum Mollusca includes some of the most beautiful exemplars of biological pigmentation, with the vivid co...
